Untitled 7' by 7' “Son of Man”

Being assigned to create 49 individual 1ft by 1ft drawings to create an overall image was not something I was entirely ready for March of 2021. The only conditions of this assignment was to dive deep into a theme creating a abstract or literal representation and pushing what is expected with the materials to create the large-scale artwork.

Through planning all the different ways I could complete this task, I decided to research some of my favorite art pieces. I was drawn to the overall feel for Rene Magritte’s art. Flipping through his work, I found the theme I wanted to work with. The theme of humanity. This theme only grew as I started my final art piece. These silly, single-line doodles of faces as I drew hundreds of them for hours at a time began to tell stories of themselves. Not one face was the same and even with their oversimplified faces, I feel that they blended well with Rene Magritte’s mood of wonder and weightlessness.

My final piece is done completely with 2 XL Sharpies, and watercolor.
