Re-creating “The Velveteen Rabbit”

Fall 2019

As a class project, we had to choose a children’s book to re-illustrate. I chose the Velveteen Rabbit as I felt it was a great classic, although, I found the original illustrations did not match the imagination and magical story it was. This was my first digital illustration and where I found a passion for this bright colored style inspired by a French Illustrator: Laurent Moreau. I created these illustrations in the Krita Software using a Surface Pro.

Through exploring this new style, I found joy in the amount of expectedness it involved. As it pushed me to be more creative in my illustrations, I could see just how impactful book illustrations can be on children.

At the start of working on this assignment, I did not know where to start on re-illustrating a book without looking off of the original illustrations. I began my creative process through studying the best way to present the main character - the loved on stuffed animal rabbit. This story was especially challenging because there was a focus on the sadness of the rabbit.

Here are my beginning attempts at presenting and re-creating the story of The Velveteen Rabbit.

If I were to do this project again, although it is one of my most favorites, I would create more color studies and think about where text will be placed on these book pages.
